City Seeking Applicants for Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee

The City of Greenville is gearing up for the launch of GVL2040a two-year initiative to update its long-range Comprehensive Plan. The City adopted its last Comprehensive Plan in 2009 and by state law, must update the plan at least every 10 years. The Comprehensive Plan is designed to address the City’s current development trends, determine a vision for how the community would like to see the city develop over the next 20 years and create a plan for how to achieve this vision.

Once complete, the plan will be used by elected officials, planning staff, planning boards and commissions and other departments to guide local regulations, policies and capital improvement projects that impact development and quality of life in Greenville. Nine specific elements must be covered in the Comprehensive Plan (population, economic development, natural resources, cultural resources, community facilities, housing, land use, transportation and priority investment) and broad-based citizen participation and input are essential to the plan’s success.

As a first step, the City is now accepting applications for a citizen-based Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee, which will play an integral role in the development of the plan. Beginning in September, the committee will meet approximately nine times over 20 months and will work closely with the City’s planning staff and the consultant team, led by Planning NEXT, to guide the planning process.

The application is available on a new web portal created specifically for the Comprehensive Plan at http://gvl2040.com. The deadline to apply is Friday, August 17 at 5 p.m. Applicants must reside within the city limits of Greenville.
